A Skate Park for Beeston – where could it go?

A fantastic social enterprise inspired by Skate Nottingham in association with Broxtowe Council envisages creating skateboard-friendly sculptures in Beeston and across the Borough in the run-up to next year’s Olympics.

Nottingham is one of the original homes of UK skateboarding - with a 50-year history in a sport that will join the Olympics for the first time in Tokyo. Our city may also be represented in Tokyo by local professional skateboarder - Skateboard GB team-member Alex Hallford. The sport is unique in encouraging young people to develop expertise in the sport and complementary creative interests like design, film and photography. And Beeston could be part of it.

Imagine a community whereby the skills developed by our young people involve them from ‘the ground up’. These could start with building wooden ramps with friends before progressing into careers in civil engineering or landscape, the built environment and architecture - inspiring future generations.

The vision is to identify local areas that could benefit from these installations - teaming up with local youth groups/schools to create them.  Skating is a wonderfully free, healthy social activity for all ages - especially the young who so often do not have enough to entertain them - so this will really help our entire community.

The skate park idea is sensational. Lead by Chris Lawton from Nottingham Trent University it has has really kicked off something that has realistic potential to succeed at so many levels. World recognition for Beeston. Inspirational from concept to completion – socially Inclusive, with health and fitness benefits - adding value to our community.

Do you have any thoughts about where the skate parks might be built?

"I have learned to distrust landlords at every turn. CP Walker is a big exception. Always very courteous and down to earth. We were treated with respect, even though, as (postgrad) students, could have been regarded with suspicion. Good communicators. Addressed various issues (e.g., maintenance) on a quick - or at least very fair – timeframe. [Student Tenant for 1 year]"
